*Alright ladies, we’re about to break it down and talk about our periods! Guys, this is your chance to skip to a different article…you’ve been warned 🙂 *
Yes, you read that right. Did you even know there was a such a thing as “period underwear“? I didn’t up until a couple months ago. And honestly, to me, it kind of sounded like something you might want to throw in the trash instead of something you pay for…but what did I know?
Periods? What does this have to do with a “travel blog”. Well, let me ask you this? Did you ever go on vacation and get stuck having your period that week? Or even try to plan your vacation around when your period is supposed to come so you don’t have to worry about it during your travels? I know for me, having my period means I have to stop what I’m doing and find a bathroom every two hours or so. Having to always check and wonder if something is on my pants. Having to make sure I’m carrying enough tampons. Or if I’m somewhere overseas, know where to find products I’m comfortable with and where the bathrooms are located when I want to be out exploring.
Well ladies….our lives just got easier.
THINX is a company run by women in New York City and create jobs for the local women of Uganda. Every time someone buys a pair of THINX underwear- funds go to a partner organization in Uganda to help provide feminine products to women in the area. Why Uganda? Because over 90% of the girls who live there don’t go to school during their periods and it forces many drop out all together.
So what is this period underwear anyways?? Well, it works like a really absorbent pad….but without actually wearing one. The underwear itself has a built in permanent “lining” that protects you during the day. They come in different absorbencies…kind of like tampons themselves. There are ones you can wear for light, medium, or heavy days.
And you know what? They’re actually pretty cute…..and comfortable! When I bought them, I was worried they would feel like a diaper. But they don’t, once on, they feel just like my regular underwear!
Since my period is really heavy, I went ahead and bought their most absorbent kind. They are black hiphuggers with lace trim. Bye bye to the days that you need to wear your “ugly” underwear during that time of the month….or ruining your cute underwear. Now we can feel attractive AND comfortable while on our period.
So wait…..you don’t wear a pad or tampon anymore…just these underwear?? Technically the website says that they are made as a back up, kind of like a pantyliner (even thought they can absorb up to two tampons worth!). But they say that everyone is different and that some women just wear the underwear without any other product.
This is what I did: I wore just the underwear around the time I was expecting my period to show up. (Normally, I wear a light tampon just so I’m not caught off guard…so this in and of itself was nice not to have to do!) Once I got it, I wore my normal tampon and instead of having to wear a pad for back up as well when we went out of the house, I just put on these underwear. I did that for the first 3 days as they are my heaviest. The last few days of my period, I wore only the underwear without any tampons or pads. And you know what? NO LEAKS, guys! None. I was nervous to begin with, checking occasionally to make sure there were no embarrassments waiting to happen.
I was out all day and didn’t have to worry about running to the bathroom to change every couple of hours. Even when I could tell I needed to, I was busy outside at a park with my son and I was so glad we didn’t have to stop, hunt down a gross outside bathroom, and stop playing. The underwear worked great!
To me, this means not having to use tampons so often. There are so many chemicals in our feminine hygiene products and wearing them all the time really isn’t good for our bodies. Some experts say the chemicals that are in our products, makes us bleed longer and heavier. So, I’m currently testing this out. If these magic underwear can make my period shorter, less heavy and less intense???? This will be extra amazing. This was only my first month using them, so we’ll see over the next couple of months if this theory pans out. UPDATE- (1/2019) Ok, this is 3 years later and I am STILL using THINX. They are amazing and I can’t believe I used to have to live without them. It really makes everything so much easier. When I’m at work (I’m a massage therapist- I can’t stop mid massage to use the bathroom!), when I’m traveling…we like to be out all day, sometimes bathrooms can’t be found when you need them…no problem any more. I’ve never had a leak…in 3 years!! The underwear lasts a long time. I still have my first pair (and about 4 others). I even throw them in the dryer even though it’s not recommended…they’ve been fine. As far as if my period is lighter now? It might be! I was reading through this article and read that I use to have 3 really heavy days…that’s down to 2 or even 1 now. And it is shorter! I have no idea if it has anything to do with the underwear and wearing less tampons….but that’s my experience! I still use the underwear as backup with a tampon and the underwear alone on really light days.
To answer another question I’m sure you’re wondering: “Wait, bleeding into underwear…isn’t that kind of gross to wear?” No, not really. They are “moisture wicking” (so, you feel dry) and anti microbial (kills bacteria). All of the blood gets sucked into an inner liner- the layer that is next to the skin feels dry. So it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing a diaper or sitting in a puddle. If you are trying these without a tampon and you get blood clots….those will stay on the top layer( like what happens with pads) and you just use some toilet paper to clear that off.
So, how do you clean these things?? You rinse them in the sink first (so they don’t get blood all over your other clothes that need washing), then put them in the washing machine (cold water, no fabric softeners) and let them air dry (which actually happens quite quickly).
So ideally, you will be able to order a couple pairs. I just bought the one pair to start out with as they’re a bit pricey ( about $25-$38) and I wanted to see if they worked first. I bit the bullet and bought a pair since I figured if these really do work…..I spend that amount of money on tampons in no time. So, I started with the one pair that would benefit me most. The most absorbent one.
If you want to try a pair yourself, you can get $10 off by using this link. If you do, it will also give me $10 off my next pair (so I thank you in advance, because I really want like 5 more pair at least, lol). Oh, and P.S.– I ordered my normal size as I would with any underwear and it worked out great. Before, there was word on the street that you needed to size up…but they fixed that issue and the website says you can now order your normal size. Mine fit perfectly ordering my regular size.
Have you already tried them? What’s been your experience?

Medieval Times- Orlando Castle
If you’ve never been to Medieval Times
before, it’s basically a dinner theater show that takes you back into time where you sit in a big “arena” and watch an action packed story filled with Kings, Princesses, Horses, and rowdy competition. It’s fun for the whole family as you get to cheer for your “color” knight in each of the competitions.
We’ve been lucky enough to see this type of show in a few different locations, but this was our first time seeing it in Orlando. Tip: Sign up for their newsletter
because they run a lot of specials for discounted tickets! (Plus, you or your kids get a free ticket for your birthday!)
This is what you see walking up to the show:
You get to go in a REAL (looking) castle!!! If that’s not a great way to start the night and ignite your imaginations then I don’t know what is 😉
After you purchase or pick up your tickets, they hand you each a colored crown to wear. This is important to take note of because that is the color of the knight that you will be cheering for!
You make your way through to an area where they offer to take your picture. If you like it, you can purchase it at the end of the evening, but you certainly don’t have to. Then, you can walk through and see all of the goodies that they have for sale. There were flags to wave to cheer on your knight (pic at the bottom), light up swords, crowns, a bar for the adults, etc.
Our favorite part about this area was the ceiling…there were so many interesting paintings on it that we were all walking around with our heads to the sky for a while, lol.
Another thing that we liked about the Orlando location, was that it had the Medieval Village. This is where you can walk through the “streets” and come across a museum type of experience featuring how things during the Medieval Time period.
One area of the museum is filled with bedroom furniture, while another shows off kitchen supplies to see what people may have used and slept on back then- among other things. The highlight for us (my husband and I anyways…luckily most of the next part went over my son’s head.) was the Medieval Torture Room. It showed all of the different devices that they used to use to torture “criminals”. Besides the actual replicas, there were signs (and pictures) explaining how each torture device was used. It was all really interesting- and made me happy that I didn’t live back then, lol. One in particular looked especially gruesome…
I’ll just leave this here:
Yes….that’s a saw…”there”….owww!
After we looked around the Village, we went back inside and waited for the show to start. Soon, they were calling our color (Yellow) and we were told what area to sit in. We were excited when they directed us to front row seats! We found ourselves seated off to the side of the arena, rather than in the middle, but it didn’t dampen the experience. So, don’t feel like you have to sit in the middle to see everything. We were all able to see the show just fine.
Here, you can see the stadium seating separated by color…and our view being all the way on the side.
When you sit down in your seat, it’s already set for dinner, including a menu with the evenings offerings on the plate.
This show is such a good deal, because not only do you get your nightly entertainment, but you also get a TON of food for dinner. You will not leave there hungry!
Here’s the menu:
They started with the tomato soup, which was pretty yummy along with some bread. Next they came out with the HUGE portions of chicken, followed by some potato, and corn on the cob. The chicken was delicious, as was the corn. After all of that food, they bring out an apple turnover for dessert! The only downfall is that the drink options are slim. Pepsi, Sprite, or Water were the only options. Coffee with dessert. We aren’t really soda drinkers, so we had water, which was fine. Oh! And if you’ve never been to this type of show, you’ll find that they for everyone to eat their dinner how people used to do it as well….with your hands! Yup, no silverware here! I did sneak in a plastic fork and knife for my son’s food though….he told me he wasn’t down with the whole eating with his hands thing. (Plus, he was having loose tooth issues and it was much easier for me to cut his food instead of him having to bite it).
The show starts while you are eating dinner. There is a story line about fighting to win the princess’ heart. Then, all of the different knights come riding out on their horses and take turns trying their hand at events like jousting, getting closest to a target, collecting rings on poles, and fighting each other. There was a lot of action to keep everyone entertained. My son was so excited to cheer on his knight, and our yellow knight ended up winning! I’m not sure if they switch it up so a different color wins on different evenings, but I would have to think they would, right?
There was another part in the show where they did falconry, which was really cool. The Falcon flies all across the arena and back to the handler. There is even a part where it flies just over your heads!
My 6 year old had the best time and still talks about it today. So, if you have kids that like castles, princesses, knights, animals, or action….you can bet they will enjoy the show….and so will you!
Go Yellow Knight! We bought this flag for $5. There were also other options in the color of your knight for $2.
*Medieval Times Orlando did provide us with tickets in exchange for an honest review of our experience there*
Stitch Fix Review April 2016 and a Giveaway!
So excited to be back for another Stitch Fix Review!! My stylist hit it out the park this time! It was such a great fix, filled with spring time clothes!
If you’re just hearing about Stitch Fix, you can see the full details here.
For everyone else, let’s get on to the good stuff!!
*And stick around til the end of the review for your chance to win a $20 Stitch Fix Gift Card!!!*
Pixley Millie Textured Dress $68
I love this dress. It fit perfectly. Sometimes dresses like this are a little loose on me and only really work with a belt, but this one didn’t need it. It’s a nice heavy quality, but very soft fabric. I especially liked the “V” shape in the back.
I kept this dress and wore it a couple days later for Easter!
Loveappella Dewitt Lace Sleeve Henley Knit Top $48
I’ve had a shirt like this pinned on my Pinterest
board for a while. I was so excited to see it in my fix! The lace sleeves are something I have been looking for, for a while. I also love the little detail of the cutout buttons in the front. Such a super cute, but casual shirt. The material is a little thinner, so I would have preferred a bit darker color I think. I felt like the shirt clung on my stomach a bit and I wouldn’t have been comfortable in it. (totally sucking in, in this picture, lol).
Loveappella Devon Pleated Mini Skirt $38
So cute!! I was a little worried when I saw that I would be getting a mini skirt, but this was perfect. It hit just above my knees which was a great length for me. The skirt has some pleating in the front and is flat in the back. It’s great for summer as it’s a pretty thin material, but with plenty of coverage.
Loveappella Mavina Floral Print Keyhole Detail Tank $48
This shirt is everything. It fit like it was made for me. It wasn’t too clingy or too loose. I usually don’t wear shirts with a high neck, but with the cute cut out, I felt it balanced it out. It’s something that looks great with jeans and also really cute with the skirt that was sent. Spoiler: I didn’t keep it. I’m kind of sad about it, lol. I just knew I was going to keep the dress because I needed something for Easter and for an upcoming wedding. I also knew that I couldn’t afford to keep everything this month. So therefore, I couldn’t bring myself to spend almost $50 on this shirt, even though I really really wanted it. With the discount, I totally would have done it….or if it was the one item I was keeping and the $20 would come off. BUT, I will definitely request this shirt in a future fix!
Status: Sadly Returned
Urban Expressions Adelade Woven Fold Over Clutch $48
I love the woven design on this purse, and the fact that it’s a neutral color that will go with a lot of pieces…but isn’t your basic black or white. I also am in love with the cute polka dot design inside!! But if I was being honest with myself, I’d have to admit that I don’t usually carry clutches. They’re a bit too small for my everyday needs and I already have one from Stitch Fix that I love for the occasions that I do wear a smaller purse.
Honestly, I would have loved to keep everything in this fix. It was one of my favorite fixes so far! But, I decided to only keep one piece this time to keep my costs down. I’ll definitely be requesting that floral tank in a future fix though! <3
